Art Terms

Limited Edition
•    An edition, as of a book or lithograph, limited to a specified small number of reproductions

Signed & Numbered
•    The manner in which an artist catalogs a limited edition.  Each piece will have a sequentially numbered Edition Size
•    Bronze sculptors inscribe the edition number accompanied with their signature on the sculpture itself
•    Painters and Photographers are known to sign them on the front of a piece but will occasionally place them on the back. 

Edition Variations
•    Within an edition Tim Cotterill the “Frogman” will alter a portion of the edition with a different color. The EV or edition variation will not exceed the original number in that edition.

Giclee  (jee'clay)
•    Meaning to squirt or to spray in French, giclees are produced now with an a high quality ink-jet printer.
•    Originally applied to fine art prints created on an Iris printer invented in the early 1990’s.

Hand Embellished
•    A term used to describe the application of paint applied to a giclee print by the artist.
•    Hand Embellishments are additional time placed into the piece by the artist and usually add to its value.
•    Embellishments may also be applied by artist's apprentices.
